“Code 10 – The device cannot start” in Device Manager in Windows XP/2000/Me/98

Windows® XP/2000

  1. Click the Start button and select Run.
  2. In the text box, type msconfig and click the OK button.
  3. Select Selective Startup.
  4. Uncheck Startup Items and click the OK button.
  5. Click the Exit Without Restart button.
  6. Right-click the My Computer icon.
  7. Select the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.
  8. Click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  9. Right-click USB Mass Storage Device and select Delete.
  10. Insert the Solutions CD that came with your drive into the CD-ROM. This will install the driver.
  11. Restart the computer.

Windows Me/98

  1. Click the Start button and select Run.
  2. In the text box, type msconfig and click the OK button.
  3. Select Selective Startup.
  4. Uncheck Startup Items and click the OK button.
  5. Click the Exit Without Restart button.
  6. Right-click the My Computer icon.
  7. Click the Device Manager button.
  8. Click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  9. Right-click USB Mass Storage Device and select Delete.
  10. Insert the Solutions CD that came with your drive into the CD-ROM. This will install the driver.
  11. Click the Start button and select Run.
  12. In the text box type msconfig and click the OK button.
  13. Select Normal Startup.
  14. Restart the computer.
